CHARLOTTE STICKEL

Charlotte Stickel is a violist who performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Described as “of great expressive depth, sensitivity, and an exceptional presence in concert” (German press), she plays with an unmistakably individual voice and an open warmth.
Her personal and artistic character is rooted in an early and natural closeness to different languages, cultures, and worldviews. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2003, she grew up in a culturally diverse and international family. Alongside her early and intensive musical training, she received a strong humanistic education in classical languages and philosophical thought, which continues to form an essential foundation for her artistic work today.
Charlotte Stickel studied in Germany and the United States. Her principal teachers include Prof. Tatjana Masurenko, with whom she studied at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig and at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, as well as Prof. Hartmut Rohde at the Berlin University of the Arts. During her time in Los Angeles, she also served as Teaching Assistant to Tatjana Masurenko.
In addition to her formal studies, she has received important artistic impulses through masterclasses and academy programmes with musicians such as Nobuko Imai, Daniel Hope, and Patricia Kopatchinskaja. She gained early orchestral and chamber music experience in projects including the German National Youth Orchestra and the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, where she worked with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle. Further formative influences came through programmes at the Kronberg Academy.
Internationally, Charlotte Stickel appears in solo recitals, duo programmes with piano, as well as solo appearances with orchestras and ensembles. She performs throughout Europe and the United States and has appeared, among other engagements, as a soloist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Heidelberg at the Mozartfest Schwetzingen and at the Colburn Gala Concert with the Colburn Orchestra under the direction of James Conlon in Los Angeles. Further engagements have taken her to festivals and concert series across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Her performances have also been broadcast by Südwestrundfunk (SWR), Germany’s public broadcasting service. Alongside her solo work, she is actively involved in a wide range of chamber music projects and performs in various ensembles on international tours, including appearances in a string quartet with Midori in Japan and Nepal.
Her repertoire spans the core classical repertoire, early music, and contemporary works. Early formative experiences in these stylistic fields include projects with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt). Today, she is in direct artistic exchange with contemporary composers such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, and performs their works with great dedication and imagination. Her artistic work is characterised by a conscious engagement with diverse musical traditions, as well as with the spaces, cultures, and contexts in which the music comes to life.
Charlotte Stickel is a prizewinner of numerous national and international competitions. Her distinctions include first prizes at the competition of the German Association of Professional Musicians (Deutscher Tonkünstlerverband) and at the European Competition for Young Soloists in Luxembourg, as well as a second prize at the International Szymon Goldberg Competition in Meißen. She has also received scholarships and grants from various foundations, including the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben, the Hummel Society, and the Jürgen Ponto Foundation for Young Artists.
